Motorcycle licence guide

The whole Taiwan scooter licence process, step by step. The hazard test you have to pass before you can even book, the fees, exam day and the riding circuit.

  1. Which route is yours?

    Your path depends on whether you already hold a driving licence that Taiwan accepts.

    • Foreigners: register in person at a Motor Vehicles Supervision Station (監理站) and pick your exam date. An ARC or Gold Card works as ID.
    • With an exchangeable foreign licence: physical exam → vision test → registration → knowledge test → driving test.
    • Check your country first at taiwandrivingtest.com/licence-check: it shows whether your car or scooter licence converts without exams.
    • Scooter/motorcycle: no learner permit needed, but a road-safety talk in Mandarin is mandatory, usually on exam day right before the written test.

  2. Medical check (before exam day)

    Minimum age is 18. Do the medical at an authorised clinic a few days before, or on exam day at the Motor Vehicles Office if it has a clinic on site.

    • ARC (Alien Residence Certificate), Gold Card, or Taiwan ID. The ARC needs 6 months of total validity, not 6 months remaining, so even its last day works.
    • Application form (provided at the Motor Vehicles Office, 監理站)
    • Physical exam + vision test at the clinic, takes about 5 minutes, costs around NT$200, no health card needed.
    • Bring 2 one-inch (passport-style) photos for the clinic, and keep 1 more for exam day.

  3. Fees (bring cash)

    Pay at the Motor Vehicles Office (監理站). Bring cash, card is usually not accepted.

    • Exam fee: around NT$250 in cash, paid on exam day.
    • Licence card: NT$200 in cash, paid when you collect the card.
    • Plus your clinic medical (around NT$200).
    • Budget around NT$650 in cash for the whole day, covering the exam, the medical and the licence card.
    • Your results stay valid for 1 year, finish everything within that window.

  4. Practice

    Practise the written bank in this app, plus riding skills on a test track.

    • Written exam: 50 questions, 30 minutes, you need 85% to pass.
    • The questions in this app are the official bank, the same ones come up in the real exam.
    • There is also a free official online simulator to rehearse the exact exam screen.
    • For the practical, a YouTube walkthrough of each manoeuvre helps a lot.
    • Practise on an outdoor course laid out like the real test, many are free and open 24 hours, or self-train on the official circuit at the 監理站.

  5. Book your exam slot

    Scooter exams are booked in advance on the official 監理服務網 site, and the hazard perception test has to be done before you can book.

    • First pass the hazard perception test (危險感知測驗) online. 10 video clips, 8 correct to pass. If you fail, watching 3 full rounds (30 clips) still lets you register your result.
    • Practise it in this app first, the Hazard category is that same official video set. Your result stays valid for 1 year.
    • Then book at 監理服務網 → 考照預約報名 (mvdis.gov.tw), choosing licence type, date and 監理站.
    • On the booking form choose 普通重型機車 (ordinary heavy motorcycle). Picking 輕型 (light) by mistake gives you a licence capped at 50cc.
    • Booking opens 1 month before the test date and closes at 24:00 two days before, so you cannot book the day before or on the day itself.
    • Places are limited (around 120 riders a day at a busy station), so book as early as you can.
    • If you cannot go, cancel online before 07:00 that morning or call the station. Three no-shows in 2 months blocks you from booking for 2 months.
    • The monitoring service line is 0800-231035 if anything goes wrong with the booking.

  6. Exam day, what happens when

    Everything is done on the same day, in order. You must pass the written test first; only then do you go to the practical test.

    • Sessions usually start at 08:00 or 13:00. Arrive well before yours, latecomers can be turned away. Bring your documents, 1 one-inch photo, and cash.
    • Only some Motor Vehicles Offices run the tests. In Taipei it is the Shilin station (士林監理站), not the central office, so check the address on your booking.
    • The written test is on a touchscreen, not on paper. Pick your language on the first screen, English is 英文.
    • 1) A 120-minute road-safety lecture, free and compulsory the first time you take a motorcycle licence, in Mandarin with crash videos. It is held before the written test and you cannot sit without it. Exempt if you already hold a light-motorcycle licence, or are retaking after a revocation.
    • 2) The health check, if you did not do it at a clinic. Vision, hearing, grip strength, and two squats to show you can get on and off the bike.
    • 3) Written test, 50 questions, 30 min. You need 85% to pass. Fail it and you re-sit about 2 weeks later.
    • 4) Riding test the same day, only if you passed the written test.
    • You can ride your own bike, borrow one, or rent one at the station. Ride your own there and failing means riding home without a licence.

  7. The practical (driving) test

    Done on the Motor Vehicles Office (監理站) circuit, a small closed track. Scored out of 100, you need 70 to pass.

    • Points come off for putting a foot down, touching a line, missing a signal, or forgetting an indicator.
    • The track opens about 30 to 45 minutes before the test. Get there early and ride as many practice laps as they allow, on the exact circuit you are graded on.

  8. On the circuit, item by item

    The examiner is holding a scoring sheet with ten items on it, eight on the circuit and two marked throughout. You start on 100 points and need 70.

    • 1) Straight line. 15 metres on a narrow painted line, and you must take 7 seconds or more.
    • Under 7 seconds costs 32 points, and since 100 minus 32 is 68, that one mistake is already a fail.
    • The straight line is the only item you may re-attempt. Nothing else on the circuit can be repeated.
    • 2) to 4) Pedestrian crossing, intersection, two-stage turn. Stop behind the line every time and never let the front wheel over it.
    • 5) and 6) Lane change and right-angle turn. Indicator first, then the mirror and a real turn of the head, then the wheel.
    • 7) and 8) Stop and go, then the railway crossing. A full stop, look both ways, and indicate before you pull away.
    • Helmet strap, mirror checks, feet on the footboard and slowing to under 15 km/h are marked the whole way round, not at any one obstacle.

  9. Get your licence

    Pass the written test first and then the practical one, and the licence is printed the same day at the office, once you pay the card fee at the counter.

    • Licence card fee: NT$200 in cash, paid when you collect the card. It is not part of the exam fee you already paid.
    • Keep it valid and renew on time.
    • You can later add other vehicle categories.
