What happens if my foreign driving licence expires while I live in Taiwan?

This question arrives in two very different shapes, and which one you are in decides whether you have a paperwork problem or a six-month problem. So start there.

If you have not exchanged it yet, you are on a deadline

Taiwan will only exchange a foreign licence that is valid on the day you stand at the counter. Not valid last month, not renewable later, valid that morning. The requirement is written into the exchange conditions, and there is no discretion at the window.

Miss that date and the exchange route closes. What is left is the ordinary Taiwanese route, written exam plus practical exam, from the beginning, exactly as if you had never driven. For a car that also means the learner permit and a three-month wait before you are allowed to sit the practical, which is how a piece of expired plastic turns into half a year.

So if your licence expires in the next few months and you are eligible to exchange, do it now. Everything else on the checklist can be arranged around that date, and none of it expires the way the licence does. You will need six months or more of legal residence (your ARC), your licence verified and translated, a medical check, two photos and NT$200.

Before you go, check what your country or state is entitled to. Reciprocity is agreed jurisdiction by jurisdiction, and for the United States it is agreed state by state, so your neighbour’s answer is not yours.

Once it is exchanged, the old one stops mattering

This is the part almost everyone gets wrong, and the good news. After the exchange you hold a Taiwanese driving licence. It is not a permit derived from your foreign one, it does not reference it, and it does not lapse when the original does. Your home licence expiring after that point changes nothing about your right to drive here.

You can see it in what renewal actually asks for. To renew a Taiwan licence you bring an identity document, the old licence and a photo, and pay NT$200. The foreign licence is not on the list. It was needed once, to open the door, and the door stays open.

Your Taiwan licence has its own expiry, and it is not your ARC’s

By law it runs six years from the day it was issued. Your ARC is a document you must produce in order to renew, not the date the licence dies on, and almost everyone repeats this the other way round. Renewal is a counter transaction, never an exam, and with an APRC the licence stops expiring altogether.

One thing to ask about before you exchange

Depending on the reciprocity arrangement with the place that issued it, Taiwan may keep, hole-punch or corner-cut your original licence when it issues the Taiwanese one. It is not universal and it depends on what your jurisdiction does to Taiwanese licences in return, which is exactly why it catches people out.

That matters here more than it looks. If you were planning to keep the home licence alive in parallel, renewing it by post from Taiwan, a punched card can make that awkward. Ask at your 監理站 what they will do with yours before you hand it over, and if you intend to renew at home, start that before the exchange rather than after.

Renewing your home licence from Taiwan is a separate question

It has nothing to do with your Taiwan licence and everything to do with who issued the original, so there is no single answer. What is worth knowing is that many licensing authorities have a route for citizens living abroad, and it is usually not the normal online renewal.

The United States is the clearest example, because it is answered state by state there too. Georgia, to take one, runs a mail-in renewal for citizens working overseas and for military families, handled by post rather than through the usual online service, and REAL ID rules still force an in-person appearance at some point in the cycle. Other states differ completely. Ask the authority that issued the licence, not a general expat guide.

Worth doing even if you already drive here on a Taiwanese licence. If you move back, a lapsed licence is a harder restart than a current one, and several places, Georgia among them, recognise Taiwanese licences on the way back.

Car and motorcycle are answered separately

Everything above applies to both, but whether you can exchange at all is decided per vehicle, and the two answers are often different. Plenty of jurisdictions exchange a car licence with no exam and offer nothing at all for a motorcycle, which means the scooter you actually need in Taiwan is the one you have to sit the exam for.
